MAT-SU— A second new lease in a month was approved for Port MacKenzie at Tuesday night's Assembly meeting. Central Alaska Energy, LLC., will lease 5.5 acres for tank farm and truck operations. The developing transportation infrastructure at Port MacKenzie is drawing the interest.
Tremendous dirt work has been accomplished in recent summers as a haul road, road/rail loop got underway. The barge dock was expanded from eight to nearly 16 acres. Reducing the slope of the port access road is under construction now. The Borough awaits a Record of Decision on a 32-mile rail link from the port to the Alaska Railroad's mainline.
The tank farm lease is for 25 years and is consistent with the Port Master Plan, and the Economic Development Strategic Plan. It will enhance the port district and increase services at Port MacKenzie.
Also approved in early September, was the lease for a trucking, marine, logistics company, called PacArctic Logistics, LLC.
Tuesday night, Central Alaska Energy CEO Justin Charon said "This project is good for port development and also provides increased competition in the fuel markets, which benefits the people of the Borough ...."
Port MacKenzie is in Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly Member Cindy Bettine's district. "I was pleased to see that some of our borough land has such great potential for revenues, and, I'm sure, creating jobs. I understand there's some pipeline permitting that needs to go hand in hand with this...."
Assembly Member Jim Colver complemented staff on a "well drawn up lease." "It covers just about anything I think you can imagine. So good job."
Assembly Member Ron Arvin welcomed Charon to Southcentral Alaska and complimented staff. "The terms of this lease I read and it's clear to me that staff understands now in the early years of the lease to reduce cost outlay for a lessee and then to pick it up in later years. And I see that this exists here. So I think staff did a good job," Arvin said.
