MAT-SU—Nordic skiers will enjoy 3.5 miles of new trails this winter in the Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass.
Construction was completed last week, a first step in developing a regional ski and recreation area.

MAT-SU— Nordic skiers will enjoy 3.5 miles of new trails this winter in the Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass.
Construction was completed last week, a first step in developing a regional ski and recreation area.

Olympic skier and Mount Marathon legend Bill Spencer designed the trails and intentionally connected the trail to spectacular views. One ridge beholds Government Peak, the Chugach Range, and Susitna Mountain. The trails are designed for recreational skiers and high school competitors. For now the trails are closed to protect the newly seeded soils. By next summer the trails will be great walking routes that meander in loops and wander over 13 bridges that cross gurgling creeks.

The new trails are designated as non-motorized by the state of Alaska. Work continues on the access road and parking lot to the site off Edgerton Parks Road.

A ribbon cutting celebration of the trails will take place for the public in the fall.
