Saturday drill simulates bus crash

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Thursday, December 06, 2007

MAT-SU—Reporters are invited to an emergency drill this Saturday on the staged scenario of a busload of tourists colliding with a van carrying a stolen biological agent.

  • EVENT: Glacier Tour Accident - Mass Casualty Modified Full-Scale Exercise
  • Saturday, August 18, 2007
  • 9:30 am - 11:30 am
  • Old Trunk Rd between MAT-SU Regional Medical Center and Fire Station 5-1

When the accident occurred the van was attempting to escape capture by State Troopers. Passengers on the bus suffer various injuries, which will be simulated with make-up. When the medics arrive, the people carrying the biological agent spread the contaminant, causing both victims and medics to be considered contaminated and required to go through the decontamination process.

MAT-SU Central Fire Department will set-up its decontamination tent and actually process the victims through the complete decontamination procedures. This will be the first exercise of this type here in the Valley. This equipment was purchased with Homeland Security grant funding.

This should be a visually exciting exercise. It represents months of planning by an inter-agency team representing Borough, city, state, and federal partners.

Media Access: A designated area near the command center (the Borough's new command and communications van) will be set up for media access. Reporters will be able to watch the action and interview players as they become available. Please call ahead if you are interested in covering.

This exercise is a partnership between the following agencies: the MAT-SU Borough Department of Emergency Service: Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Hazardous Materials Team (Fire & Rescue); City of Palmer Police Department (Dispatch); Alaska State Troopers; MAT-SU Regional Medical Center; Anchorage Fire Dept. Hazmat Team; the Army National Guard, 103rdCivil Support Team; State of Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs, Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management
