Tuesday night, newly elected Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly Member Ted Leonard took the oath of office as administered by Borough Clerk Lonnie McKechnie. Departing Assembly Member for District 4, Steve Colligan, looked on and later praised Leonard's financial expertise. Colligan served six years, reaching term limits for the Wasilla seat.

Leonard served for seven years as the executive director of the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, a $1 billion finance development corporation, which is also a public corporation for the State of Alaska. He was also deputy commissioner for Commerce for Alaska, director of finance and administrative services for Wasilla and has worked in the private sector as a chief financial officer.

The Oct. 3, 2017 election was certified, all but for District 5. Leonard will begin his term at the next Assembly meeting. In the race for Assembly District 5, the swearing in ceremony will take place at a later date. District 5 assembly candidate Clayton Tew asked for a recount. At the polls, Tew led by 19 votes. After absentee and questioned ballots were counted Tew fell back by 18 votes to incumbent Dan Mayfield.

Borough Clerk Lonnie McKechnie said the recount with the Canvass Board could begin Monday.
