The concern is a worst-case scenario of more rain in the mountains, which could lead to flooding in rivers, creeks, streams possibly affecting homes and roadways. If you start experiencing flooding and need immediate evacuation please call 911.Sandbags are available for home protection. Winds are gusting to 40 mph. So far no calls to dispatch. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ANCHORAGE HAS ISSUED A
* FLOOD WARNING FOR RIVERS AND STREAMS IN THE WESTERN
TALKEETNA MOUNTAINS INCLUDING THE RIVERS THAT CROSS THE
PARKS HIGHWAY.
* UNTIL 4 PM AKDT MONDAY
* AT 1151 AM AKDT HEAVY RAINFALL IN EXCESS OF 3 INCHES IN THE
SUSITNA VALLEY AND TALKEETNA MOUNTAINS OVER THE LAST 24 HOURS HAS
PUSHED MANY RIVERS AND STREAMS IN THE AREA TO BANKFULL LEVELS AND A
FEW WERE AT OR NEAR MINOR FLOOD STAGE. WILLOW CREEK WAS NEAR MINOR
FLOOD STAGE WITH A MORNING READING OF 9.95 FT WHILE MONTANA CREEK
WAS CLOSE TO ACTION STAGE OF 6.8 FT. BOTH OF THESE CREEKS WILL
CONTINUE TO RISE WITH RAINFALL THAT IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO
THIS AFTERNOON.
LARGER RIVERS WERE STARTING AT LOW LEVELS AS A RESULT OF RECENT COOL
TEMPERATURES... AND ARE ON THE RISE AS WELL. THE SUSITNA RIVER AT
THE PARKS HIGHWAY BRIDGE HAS CLIMBED NEARLY 2 FEET SINCE SATURDAY
MORNING AND CURRENTLY IS READING JUST BELOW 17 FEET. WATER LEVELS
WILL CONTINUE TO RISE WITH ADDITIONAL INPUTS FROM RAINFALL.
RAIN WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE PONDING OF WATER IN LOW LYING AREAS
NEAR CULVERTS AND ALONG SMALL CREEKS AND DRAINAGES. SOME ROADS
MAYBE INUNDATED AND IMPASSABLE. THIS INCLUDES AREAS ALONG THE PARKS
HIGHWAY BETWEEN MILEPOST 64 AND 100.
A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED.
STREAM RISES WILL BE SLOW AND FLASH FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED.
HOWEVER... ALL INTERESTED PARTIES SHOULD TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS
IMMEDIATELY.
