MAT-SU — Ribbon cutting ceremonies took place recently for the first two schools completed in the $214 million school bond package approved by voters in 2011.

Valley Pathways, located at the end of France Road near Palmer, is a $22.5 million project. Students from grades 7 to 12 attend. Pathway students had been in portables for 14 years. Parents said they like the school’s smaller class sizes and the independent pace. Designer: McCool Carlson Green. Contractor: Collins Construction.

Mat-Su Day School, off Tait Drive & Bogard Road, near Wasilla, is a $12.2 million project. The school welcomes kids grades K through 12 who need a different learning environment than the mainstream school system. Designer: Wolf Architecture. Contractor F-E Contracting.

The 2011 School Bond package is the largest adopted by voters in Alaska. The State is paying for 70 percent of the costs, and Mat-Su taxpayers 30 percent. The large package covers some 101 projects across the Mat-Su Borough School District, including new schools.
