Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Finished the Gs, Not Counting Ballots Yet

By 3:30 pm Friday, the Canvass Board had finished checking the eligibility of voter names on absentee ballots that start with a G. The group of five election officials will ultimately canvass through more than 2,000 ballots to see which ones are eligible to be counted for the recent Matanuska-Susitna Borough election. The Canvass Board continues its work on Sat. beginning at 10 am.

Mat-Su Borough Clerk Lonnie McKechnie said counting the ballots will begin after the questioned ballots are canvassed, which are generally the most time consuming. “The counting of the absentee ballots is expected to begin late next week,” McKechnie said.

On this third day of work by the Canvass Board, observers sat in a single row of chairs and listened to the meticulous work of these election officials. A candidate is allowed one assigned observer in the room or a candidate can observe the canvassing themselves, McKechnie said.

Updates on the progress will be provided on the Borough website and facebook and in news releases.

Some 8,802 people voted at the polls on Oct. 6, 2015. A spreadsheet of votes for the candidates and propositions is posted under elections on the Borough website and was announced on election night at close to midnight.
