MAT-SU— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) will have a staff person available at the Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s one-stop permit center throughout the summer. The Corps presence in the Mat-Su every Thursday from 8 am to 3 pm gives an opportunity for the public to work locally with the federal agency beginning April 24 and continuing through September 15.

Mat-Su Borough Development Services Manager Alex Strawn said this makes it easier for those planning projects that may be located in or near wetlands and/or other waters of the U.S. and who have questions on the Corps permitting process.

The Corps will be available at the permit center for general questions from 8 am to 10 am and will be available by appointment from 10 am to 3 pm. To make appointments with Corps staff, please call (907) 753-2619 or email permit applications or jurisdictional determination request to This email address is being protected from spambots. Streamlining processes in the Mat-Su Borough began three years ago. The efficiencies have saved more than $300,000 in labor costs and provided the public with a one-stop shop.  The Mat-Su Borough permitting staff is cross-trained to handle multiple permit types, such as driveway and utility permits. Staff are also certified floodplain managers.  The addition of the Corps and, hopefully, in the future some state agencies at the counter, will add more depth to the level of service delivered.  “Our long-term vision is a regional permit center where all permits—state, federal, local—are available in one location,” Strawn said.

The permit center is upstairs in the Dorothy Swanda Jones Building at 350 E. Dahlia Ave, Palmer.
