Warming temperatures and deteriorating road conditions are causing the closure of the access road to the new Government Peak Recreation Area. The road, Mountain Trails Drive, will be closed beginning tonight, April 2. The 7.5 km of Nordic ski trails are still in great shape. Alternate access to the trails will be via Edgerton Parks Road and Moose Lick Circle. Space is available for 15 cars.
The “Race to the Outhouse” is still on for Saturday, April 6. The access road will be open for it in the frozen morning hours, but all vehicles need to exit by the afternoon thaw at 1pm.
Construction on the one-mile access road is not completed. The road closure will protect the Borough asset from damage until conditions harden the surface and construction resumes.
The Mat-Su Ski Club will continue to groom nearby Archangel Road for people skiing or walking with dogs.
